Client's Guide to Choosing Pet Insurance

The Benefits of Pet Health Insurance Our pets are members of our family and no one likes to think about what may happen if that family member gets sick or has an accident - but they do. Unfortunately, there is no government health insurance like that which we have for ourselves. That means that when our pets need medical care, we their guardians have to take care of them ourselves. Quality veterinary care is available, however, there are many expenses associated with providing that care.

Pet health insurance is a way to protect you and your petfrom the stress of unexpected medical treatment. Choosing the right company and the right plan for you is a very important decision to ensure you receive the coverage you want. To assist you, here are some questions you may want to consider when choosing you pet health insurance provider. Asking the following questions can provide you with useful information:

Coverage

  1. How many plans are there to choose from?
  2. Is there a possibility that my pet will run out of coverage if it has a long standing problem? Is there a lifetime limit to the coverage? How do your limits work, do they renew each year? Do I have this limit amount for each illness condition or are a number of similar conditions grouped into one limit?
  3. Is there anything that isn't covered, such as veterinary exams, certain illnesses or surgeries? What are the restrictions of coverage? If you have a purebred pet, be sure to ask if exclusions from coverage vary from breed to breed.
  4. Are there age limits to the coverage for older pets? Will my premium (monthly cost) increase as my pet ages?

Company

  1. How long have you (the insurance company) been in business?
  2. What if I change my mind? Do you have a money-back guarantee?
